We're knee-deep in a pair of side-by-side patio projects in Chaska right now, and they're coming together exactly the way we planned. Both yards needed a solid retaining wall foundation before any patio work could even start - and that's exactly where we began.

Here's the thing about retaining walls that a lot of homeowners don't think about up front: the wall isn't just decorative. It's doing real structural work. It holds the patio base in place, manages grade changes in the yard, and keeps everything level season after season. Getting it right at this stage means the patio on top performs the way it should for years down the road.

The smooth block walls we built here are tight, level, and capped clean. Once the wall is locked in, we move into base prep - compacted gravel, proper drainage, the unglamorous stuff that nobody sees but everybody benefits from. That's where a paver patio either holds up or doesn't.

One of the patios is already laid out in full - large-format pavers set in a clean grid pattern with a contrasting dark border course running the perimeter. It's a sharp look that pairs well with the home's exterior, and the border detail is one of those finishing touches that separates a well-built patio from a basic one. The second site is still in base prep, but the wall is done and the base is being staged.

Two yards, same crew, same standard of work. That's how we operate.
