Boulder walls get a reputation for failing - and honestly, it's usually because they weren't built right the first time. No proper base, no good drainage, stones stacked without any real thought to weight distribution. Over time, that catches up with you. The wall shifts, leans, and eventually becomes a hazard instead of a feature.
Here's what we were working with on this one: an existing boulder wall that had seen better days. The kind of setup where you can tell corners were cut somewhere along the way. So we did what we always do in that situation - we tore it out and started fresh. Not a patch job. A full rebuild.
When we put it back together, every decision was made with longevity in mind. Proper boulders, set with intention. Stones interlocked the way they should be, not just stacked and hoped for the best. And then the space opened up into something really worth seeing - a paver patio with a built-in fire pit ring, the kind of outdoor setup that actually gets used.
The wall wraps the space and gives it structure. That's the thing about a well-built retaining wall - it's not just doing a job underground. It's framing your whole yard. And when the patio sits right up against it, tied in with steps coming down from the upper level, everything feels intentional. Solid. Like it belongs there.
This is the kind of work where the difference between done and done right is enormous. A wall that's built properly isn't something you think about. It just holds - season after season, year after year. That peace of mind is worth every bit of the extra effort it takes to get it right from the start.
