Sometimes a yard doesn't need a complete overhaul to look completely different. The right combination of clean edging, fresh mulch, and well-chosen plants can do more for a home's curb appeal than people expect. That's exactly what we were going for at this Richfield, MN home.

We used Chilton stone to create a sweeping, curved border along the side of the house. Chilton is a natural quarried stone with a flat, layered look - it gives a bed edge a lot more character than standard plastic or aluminum edging. The curve we laid follows the natural flow of the yard, which keeps the whole thing from looking too rigid or forced.

Inside the bed, we went with a mix of hydrangeas and ornamental grasses. The hydrangeas bring that big, soft bloom that looks great against brick, and the grasses add some texture and movement between them. Dark mulch ties everything together and makes the plants pop. It's a simple formula, but the results speak for themselves.

This is actually just one piece of a larger yard makeover we're working on for this homeowner. Hardscape and concrete restoration is still ahead - so there's more to come from this property. We'll keep posting updates as the work progresses.

Garden bed work like this is one of those things that's easy to put off but makes a huge difference once it's done. A well-defined bed with healthy plants and clean edging changes how the whole front of a house reads from the street.
