Retaining walls look simple from the outside. Stack some blocks, done, right? Not even close. A wall that's built without the proper base, drainage, and reinforcement behind it is going to move, crack, or blow out - and it's usually just a matter of when, not if. That's exactly why we don't cut corners on the stuff you can't see once the job is finished.
Here's what we were working with on this one - a significant grade change that needed to be controlled and stabilized with a properly engineered modular block wall. Our crew excavated down to a solid base, brought in clean drainage aggregate behind the wall, and built each course level and tight before moving up. Every block gets checked. Level, set, adjust, repeat. That's the process.
The drainage piece is probably the most overlooked part of any retaining wall job. Water has to have somewhere to go. If it builds up behind the wall, it creates hydrostatic pressure that no amount of stacking can hold back forever. We pack drainage stone behind the wall as we build so water moves through and away - not into the wall itself.
What you end up with is a wall that actually does its job for the long haul. It holds the grade, protects the slope, and doesn't buckle under pressure when Minnesota winters do their thing. The block itself looks great too - but the real work is everything behind it that nobody ever sees. That's what separates a wall that lasts from one that doesn't.
Our crew put in solid work on this one from start to finish. If you've got a slope that's eroding, a grade that needs controlling, or you've been putting off a retaining wall project - this is the kind of team you want on it.
